Why HSR?
We are committed to providing farmers with quality service and maize to achieve the best results for their farm and herd at a cost-effective price.
HSR Seeds is one of Australia and New Zealand’s leading producers of Maize seed. We have been pioneering research and development in Australian and New Zealand agriculture for generations.
Despite competing with multinational corporations, we're proud to say that we are Australian and New Zealand owned. Our developments in hybrid maize seed are helping Australian and New Zealand farmers to grow better crops, enhancing our nations' reputation for quality produce worldwide.
The benefits
Increase lactation length
Short lactation periods are expensive because the herd needs to be fed whether or not it's producing milk. If there is a shortage of pasture, feeding maize silage to extend the lactation period can significantly increase the economic surplus on the farm.
Benefit the environment
Growing maize silage on farms helps to recycle dairy shed effluent through the maize crop and offers the opportunity to introduce modern, higher-yielding grass species in the autumn. Feeding cows maize silage also reduces the amount of nitrogen lost in urine patches
Fill feed gaps
Feed deficits at critical times of the year limit productivity. Maize can be used strategically to fill early spring and summer feed gaps, resulting in less seasonal changes in production, stabilised income and less stress for farmers.
Achieve higher milk solids
Research results indicate that providing high-quality maize silage on New Zealand farms can extend lactation. For herds being fed maize silage, milk response rates of over 100 grams of milk solids per kilogram of maize silage dry matter have been achieved.
Reduce/manage costs
Growing on the farm is becoming increasingly common, with more factors being in the farmer's control and reducing costs. Bought-in feed often costs significantly more, so they can be budgeted for, but there is a risk of issues out of the farmer's control.
Increase grazing rotation
Post-calving rotation lengths affect pasture availability for the herd. Speeding up rotation can lower pasture cover and milk production, so having maize silage can help minimise this issue. Research shows that feeding herds well in early lactation creates fewer non-cycling cows.
"I grew HSR maize on three farms last year. This year was the first time I used the product. The service I had from Guy and David was excellent, and the crop performed well in what was a strong growing season."
HSR Replant Policy
Growing an excellent maize crop requires good planning and following best practice farming processes, however sometimes failures may occur.
